Stimson Lumber Co. to close its Atlas Mill in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Stimson Lumber Co. said it plans to close its Atlas Mill in Coeur d’Alene on Dec. 31 because of dwindling sales. The Portland-based company will lay off about 120 employees.

The Atlas mill, which is located off Seltice Way, makes pine and cedar boards used for fencing, decking, housing trim and siding. Stimson CEO Andrew Miller said consumer demand has been shifting to wood composites, vinyl, and other plastic products over the last several years and that the Atlas operation is no longer profitable.
