Smurfit-Stone to stay open in Frenchtown, Montana till Jan. 5 because of demand for linerboard

The irony for millworkers at Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.’s http://www.smurfit.com/content/ Frenchtown plant is both bitter and sweet.

After announcing it would permanently shut down operations on Dec. 31, word came from Smurfit’s corporate headquarters that plant operations would continue through Jan. 5.

The reason?

Immediate demand for the mill’s paper product.
