BAUCUS TO HOLD TOWN HALL TO DISCUSS HEALTH CARE FOR LIBBY

Senator to Bring Top U.S. Health Care Official to Libby to Hear from Residents

Montana’s senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus will hold a town hall meeting with the nation’s top health care official, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, to discuss health care coverage for people with asbestos-related illness from the exposure in Libby, Montana.

As Chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, Baucus fought to include coverage for Americans affected by public health emergencies – like the one in Libby – in the new health care law. As a result of Baucus’ efforts, victims of the asbestos exposure in Libby are now eligible for federally-funded health care coverage.

As the top U.S. health care official, Secretary Sebelius is charged with ensuring the health care coverage is working well for the residents of Libby and all victims of the exposure. At the town hall, she and Baucus will talk with residents about ways to ensure the continued successful implementation of the law and the coverage it provides. Secretary Sebelius will also visit the CARD clinic, where many victims of the exposure receive care, during her visit to Libby.

The new health care law, the Affordable Care Act, is aimed at lowering health care costs for Montanans and all Americans, improving health care coverage across the state and country, and modernizing America’s health care system for the 21st century.

In June, Baucus received international recognition for his work to bring justice to the people of Libby fighting mesothelioma. He received the Bruce Vento Hope Builder Award, named after the late Minnesota Congressman who died from mesothelioma in 2000.

The group called Senator Baucus a “champion and an invaluable supporter in the quest to eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending disease.”
