Saco, Montana The Tiny Town With Big Adventures

Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs

It’s surprising what even the smallest towns in Montana can offer, and Saco (population 159) is no exception.

Located in Phillips County, Saco is a stop along Montana’s Hi-Line. Running from east to west, the Hi-Line cuts along the northern stretch of Montana, where the BNSF railroad was built. Legend has it that a globe was spun, and the initial railroad stops-turned-towns were named wherever the finger landed. One finger, supposedly, landed on Saco, Maine.

Though Saco is smaller than many towns on the Hi-Line, it’s an excellent jumping-off point for experiencing Montana’s Great Plains. It notably is the closest stop to Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs, the Hi-Line’s only soaking spot. Additionally, it offers access to great fishing, wildlife watching, and, for the cured meat enthusiasts among us, award-winning bacon.
