REC Silicon announces partial shutdown of Butte facility

REC Silicon announced in a Wednesday press release that its wholly owned subsidiary REC Advanced Silicon Materials LLC is shutting down its polysilicon production capacity at its Butte facility.

The plant employs about 300 people in Butte-Silver Bow County and is one of the top private employers in the county.

J.P. Gallagher, Butte-Silver Bow’s chief executive, said REC is shutting down the polysilicon chip-making part of the plant but not functions related to saline gas. He wasn’t sure how many employees work on polysilicon production “but I’ve heard it’s somewhere between 60 and 80.”
