PR won’t solve everything Full Swing PR

Full Swing PR
In five years of business, we’ve seen and heard a lot from struggling small business owners.

We’ve grown our own company 193% in the past two years, so we’ve learned a thing or two about sales from our own journey and working with clients who think PR will automatically lead to a sales windfall.

Spoiler alert: It won’t.

That’s because PR ≠ sales. PR is all the places you show up in the wider world. So, while we can get you press clips left and right, it won’t solve your sales problem if you view publicity as a band-aid solution to deep, underlying issues across your business.

There’s no shame in it..

We have six- and seven-figure clients who have come to us with a fundamental sales or operations problem. Sometimes, they have some other business or mindset issue that PR alone cannot solve.

Our approach to PR most definitely centers clients’ sales funnels and plays to their strengths, but there are situations where we can’t help. So before dropping 10% of your budget on marketing and PR, consider if you’re really ready for PR.

You’re not if:

  • You don’t know what you’re selling. Your offer is unclear.
  • Your offer doesn’t solve a clear problem for your ideal client or customer. There’s no transformative result from using your product or service.
  • You’re trying to reach everyone and their mother instead of narrowing in on an ideal client or customer.
  • You’re struggling to stay organized from an operations standpoint.
  • You’ve been so burned by PR in the past that you aren’t open to coaching or trying new strategies.
  • Your business is making money now, but you’re considering a major pivot or rebranding in the near future.

It’s not to say that business owners in these situations don’t need help. We all need help when scaling a business.

If you need clarity on your offer or personal or business mission, business or executive coaching can be a tremendous help.

If you struggle with systems and processes needed to effectively serve clients, you need operations support.

If you feel personally victimized by investments you’ve made in the past, you might need therapy or a mindset coach.

However, the most successful clients we work with (and 80% of our clients stay with us longer than a year) check two boxes:

  • They know PR is a long game and the investment over time is manageable with the revenue they’re bringing in.
  • They have a proven product or service people want to buy. Then we come in and pour gasoline, so to speak, on the fire they’ve created with their business.

Check your product, positioning, and messaging before you wreck yourself with worry. PR is only as effective as the problem you know you hired a team to solve.

To knowing what help you need and when,

Caitlin + Holly

P.S. – Last week, we told you how we helped architect Allison Bryan land a feature article in Dwell. It’s live now, and we hope you’ll check it out and give OSC a follow!

PS: Publicity gets you eyeballs, but unless you connect your PR efforts back to your sales funnel, you won’t see meaningful business results.

Our Rocketship Retainer package allows underrecognized small business owners to outsource their PR and marketing to us and attract local, regional, and national PR. Then, we amplify press wins through email marketing and social media in order to pack your pipeline and convert new clients.
