Omaha Launches Free Electric Bikeshare Covering 125 Square Miles. ‘Best Bikeshare in America’ – What About Your Community?

Heartland Bikeshare, a nonprofit operating a 400-vehicle electric fleet, announced unlimited 60-minute rides at no cost for residents over 16 within its service area. This move significantly reduces fare barriers that previously covered only 10 to 15 percent of operating expenses.

The program spans more than 80 stations across Nebraska and Iowa, allowing riders to cross state lines seamlessly. Funding comes from sponsorships, philanthropy, and city support, with Omaha providing equipment, staff, and maintenance. Heartland CEO Benny Foltz emphasized his belief in making bicycles a valid transportation option by removing cost barriers. The initiative builds on a 2023 fare-free experiment and follows Indianapolis’s 2024 free bikeshare launch.

This free rides pilot is funded for one year, with plans to seek at least two more years of support based on public health, economic, and equity outcomes.

Montana businesses and policymakers might consider similar fare elimination strategies to enhance micromobility in sprawling or rural areas, if local conditions and infrastructure support it. Given the geographic scale and transportation challenges in some regions, such programs could reduce barriers to mobility and promote sustainable connectivity if matched with adequate infrastructure investments.
