North Dakota gas flaring raises energy, pollution concerns

In a report on North Dakota’s oil boom, The New York Times says one-third of the natural gas produced every day is burned off, a practice the paper says raises concerns about wasted energy and additional air pollution.

The paper calls the flaring, occurring in the Bakken oil field, "a step backward for a domestic energy industry." The 15,000-square-mile find is the biggest U.S. discovery in four decades.
