New summer cross-cultural leadership course offered at Montana State University

Montana State University will offer a special leadership development course this summer that will allow students to interact with student leaders from Middle Eastern and Northern African countries.

UC202 Leadership Foundations, offered through MSU’s University College, will be held in conjunction with the visit of 20 international students at MSU through the U.S. State Department’s Middle Eastern Partnership Initiative (MEPI) program.

The course will be co- taught by Deidre Combs and Leadership Fellows Program http://www.montana.edu/lf/ director Carmen McSpadden. Both Combs and McSpadden serve as national management consultants and members of the University College leadership faculty.

Students will have selected joint sessions and service learning with the MEPI students. The course includes sessions focused on the important leadership issues currently facing both the Middle East and the United States.

"Our focus is to offer a truly substantive, highly interactive and enjoyable summer course for the students," Combs said.

While in the U.S., MEPI students participate in focused leadership development, civic engagement and social justice courses.

"It’s an extraordinarily competitive program so it’s fair to say that we have gotten to work with some of ‘the best of the best’ from universities throughout the Middle Eastern region," said Janelle Rasmussen, MSU Office of International Programs.

McSpadden said students who enroll in the course will receive both intensive leadership training as well as an "opportunity to participate in a substantive cultural exchange during a fascinating time in Middle Eastern history."
