Montana Secretary of States States That Nearly 5,000 Montana businesses registered in February… Really??!!!

“Montanans continue to register new businesses and our office is honored to assist with the first step in their journey,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Family, friends, and neighbors are excited to begin their new endeavors, and we’re excited to partner with the business community to help them achieve their goals.”

I’m very concerned about this news. While I hope that all of these are valid companies that will generate continued revenue for the Montana economy, I am highly doubtful that this is the case. How many are “companies” that are just to register an expensive car or motor home to elude the taxes that would have been incurred by the new owner in another state? How many are shells for tax purposes? How many are really valid companies with payrolls and products? I think it’s important that the Secretary of State clarify these numbers and give the world a true representation of the Montana economy. As Samuel Clemens said: “Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics”.
