Nation’s Largest Human Composting Facility Opens in Maryland – Have you watched Soylent Green?
The largest human composting facility in the nation just opened in Maryland, processing up to 2,000 bodies annually. Earth Funeral’s new 37,000-square-foot site in Elkridge offers a significant structural shift in end-of-life options along the East Coast, where previously remains had to be sent to distant states for composting. This facility’s scale and technology mark a turning point in how eco-friendly burial alternatives can be delivered regionally.
The site uses 126 rotating vessels to transform human remains into approximately 300 pounds of nutrient-rich soil per body within about a month. This method contrasts sharply with cremation, which consumes roughly 600 pounds of fossil fuels per body. Human composting has been legalized in 14 states over the last 17 years, and a recent Wake Forest University survey indicates over half of Americans would consider alternatives like this. Maryland Delegate Jessica Feldmark, who helped legalize the practice, notes the soil can support land conservation and restoration projects. Funerary law expert Tanya Marsh highlights the rapid legal acceptance compared to cremation’s slower rise.
The facility is now operational and will serve the entire East Coast, while more states consider legalization.
Montana businesses and communities might watch this development with interest as they evaluate local environmental priorities and consumer preferences. Given Montana’s expansive landscapes and cultural ties to land stewardship, human composting could align with regional values around sustainability. However, the logistical and regulatory frameworks will influence how quickly such options might be adopted in more rural or Western states.
