MPG Ranch Newsletter: Issue III

The winter solstice passed quietly, leaving the lower reaches of MPG Ranch cloaked in muted vegetation and patches of lingering slush. Late autumn’s warm days had kept the grasses green, the ponds unfrozen, and travel corridors unobstructed. These mild conditions provided wildlife with ample opportunity to build their winter fat reserves, preparing for the harsher days to come.

Right on cue, the new year arrived with a measurable snowstorm, laying down the long-awaited base for the season. It was a fresh, pristine start to the year. This blanket of snow is the stage the ermine and snowshoe hares had prepared for months ago with their seasonal color change.

MPG Ranch now enters a period of quiet. Over the coming months, human activity will nearly disappear from the landscape, and the wildlife that remains active will move at a slower, more deliberate pace. In this stillness, the subtle signs of life become more noticeable, offering a deeper appreciation for the resilience and adaptability required to endure the harsh winter months ahead.
