Montana’s Media Arts in the Public Schools program producing videos for a variety of clients

All along, the goal of the MAPS Media Institute http://www.mapsmediainstitute.com/ has been to train students for jobs in film production. That’s why it is so gratifying for executive director Laura Henderson that the program has attracted some high-profile paying clients recently.

"We are doing more in-house work than ever before," she said. "We’re very excited."

MAPS was formed in 2004 at Corvallis High School as a state-approved accredited art class, but in 2009 evolved into an after-school media arts program serving all five Ravalli County high schools.

Right now, MAPS students are working on five important projects for a wide variety of paying clients: State Farm Insurance, Montana PBS, the Office of Governor Brian Schweitzer, Montana Vocational Rehab and the Ravalli County Fair.

The MAPS after-school mission is to inspire, educate, and train Ravalli County high school students in multiple media courses and disciplines. Additionally, MAPS participants often see increased performance and achievement in their school day activities.

All MAPS programs combine traditional education techniques with effective business strategies. To assist in achieving our goals, industry professionals are frequent guests and students work side-by-side with award-winning experts.

In addition to hands-on, media proficiency and literacy, students learn many essential life skills, among them: communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership, public speaking, budgets and deadlines.
