Montana towns on the edge of Bakken oil boom struggle with costs

Montana will collect $800,000 less from each new well compared with North Dakota

A half-dozen farm towns in eastern Montana have been transformed into bedroom communities for workers toiling in the Bakken oil patch. But unlike North Dakota cities that reap tax money from oil to help keep pace with double-digit growth, the struggling Montana municipalities get next to nothing.
