Montana Tech Launches Broadband Job Training Programs by 2026 – TDS Telecom to offer scholarships

Montana Tech

Highlands College of Montana Tech is launching three micro-credential programs to fill broadband infrastructure jobs by fall 2026.

The college aims to quickly prepare workers for in-demand careers in Montana’s connectivity sector, addressing the state’s rural internet access challenges. This structural shift reflects growing attention to workforce development in emerging industries.

The programs focus on heavy equipment operation, fiber splicing, and warehousing, each requiring 16 to 19 credits. A mobile training van will deliver fiber splicing instruction to rural communities, enhancing local access to hands-on learning. The initiative is supported by a four-year Strengthening Community Colleges Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and developed in collaboration with Missoula College, Flathead Valley Community College, Education Design Lab, and industry partners. TDS Telecom contributed $3,000 to fund scholarships for three students enrolling in fall 2026.

Students can apply now for classes scheduled to begin in fall 2026.

Montana’s vast geography and dispersed population may make mobile training especially valuable, potentially lowering barriers to entry for rural residents seeking broadband careers. Such targeted workforce efforts could stimulate local economies and accelerate the modernization of infrastructure critical to Montana’s future growth.
