Montana State University Leadership Institute participant, Teresa Snyder named to Montana Board of Regents

Gov. Brian Schweitzer on Thursday named Teresa Snyder, a recent student body president at Montana State University, as the Montana Board of Regents’ newest student regent.

Snyder, 26, now an MSU graduate student seeking a master’s of public administration through the political science department, was one of three students interviewed for the job. She will begin a one-year term on July 1, replacing Robert Barnosky of Billings. The student regent is a voting member of the seven-member Board of Regents, which oversees the Montana University System.

The last time a student regent was chosen from the Bozeman campus was 11 years ago, when Jeremy Fritz served from 1999 to 2000.

"My passion for student success and the drive to affect positive change for the Montana University System will make me an asset to the board," Snyder wrote in her application to the governor. Snyder wrote that she also conducted research for the regents’ reinvention and reform committee, which is looking for ways to improve the University System.

Snyder was elected president of the Associated Students of MSU in the spring of 2009 and served for one year. Originally from Kansas, she graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science.

As an undergraduate, Snyder participated in the MSU Leadership Institute http://www.montana.edu/leadership/ , was an honor student on the dean’s list, participated in the Undergraduate Scholars Program and presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. At the same time, she also held down jobs as night audit manager at the Hampton Inn and children’s ski instructor at Big Sky over three years.
