Montana PBS Expands Free TV Access in Eastern Montana

Montana PBS has expanded free public television access with the purchase of three stations in eastern Montana.
Montana PBS finalized the acquisition of KYUS-TV in Miles City, KXGN-TV in Glendive, and K13IG-D in Sidney, marking the first time these communities receive free, over-the-air PBS programming. This acquisition represents a notable structural shift in rural broadcast access, addressing coverage gaps in some of the smallest markets in the nation.
The stations now deliver all five Montana PBS broadcast channels, with programming going live in February following years of negotiations, engineering studies, and Federal Communications Commission approvals. Dawson Community College played a role in transmitting the signal from campus to the distant broadcast towers, including KXGN-TV’s tower in Makoshika State Park. The conversion of these commercial stations to noncommercial educational licenses is described as extremely rare within the broadcasting industry.
Two days of community events are scheduled for April 24 and 25 in Miles City to celebrate the new service.
For Montana businesses and residents, this development could enhance regional connectivity and educational outreach in eastern Montana’s rural landscape. Given the vast distances and sparse population, expanded public television access may influence local information networks and cultural engagement, potentially impacting community cohesion and regional market dynamics.
