MACo Awards President’s ScholarshipsJames P. Hart, MACo President and Madison County Commissioner, announced the awards of the 2019 MACo President’s Scholarships. Ayden Anderson is the winner of the $1,000 Montana Association of Counties 2019 President’s Scholarship and Jourdain Klein is the winner of the $500 scholarship. Ayden is graduating from Twin Bridges High School and Jourdain is graduating from Ennis High School. |

New Montana State Meal RatesEffective July 1HB 175 (2019) changed the state meal reimbursement rates. If your county’s meal rates are tied to the statutory state rate or the rate set in the Montana Operations Manual, then your meal rates will be going up. If you formally adopted a resolution setting the rates differently, you’ll remain at those rates; however, if something formal wasn’t adopted, but your travel claim form references the state rates, you may be required to increase your rates—please refer to your county attorney. I would like to encourage all county officials to consider participating in the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy (HPLA) as they prepare their 2019-2020 budgets. The program focuses on essential leadership skills including communication, collaboration, and managing change. I feel this course has made me a much more effective administrator, and I now feel more prepared to help the Commissioners develop long range plans and strategies to address some of the issues facing Carbon County. Lifetime Flathead Valley resident, Joe Arlee DeLong, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019. He was 89 years old. DeLong was born on July 13, 1929, to Milton A. and Ruth A. DeLong in Somers. He was a Flathead County Commissioner in the 1970’s and MACo Past President from 1975 to 1976.Read More >> |

| Lesson Learned: Ladder Safety Training is an Effective way to Prevent Needless AccidentsA member county maintenance employee was drilling a hole in the wall. He was standing on the third rung of a 4-foot ladder. The ladder came out from underneath him. He fell on his back to the floor hitting his head neck on the center wall. The findings showed the ladder was opened and locked in place; however, the employee was leaning too far to one side He was not facing his work and he did not have a spotter.
