Made by a Griz for Grizzlies: How a University of Montana Alum Invented Bear Spray

Carrie Hunt invented bear spray as a master’s student at the University of Montana in the 1980s. Since then, she has used her expertise in bear behavior to develop novel techniques to promote human-wildlife coexistence.

“I started testing old-timey remedies like moth balls around the tent, railroad flares, human urine and boat horns,” Hunt said. “I was willing to try anything.”
