Leadership courses for the public begin Nov. 18 at Montana State University

Two professional development courses beginning Nov. 18 offer hands-on leadership training to managers, supervisors and up-and-coming leaders. The training is offered by Montana State University’s Extended University and takes place on the MSU campus in Bozeman.

The first session, "Leading from Within," takes place on Nov. 18 and 25 and focuses on the leader as a person. Participants will examine their personal management skills, leadership strengths and growth opportunities, and how they relate to others at work. The second session, "Leading Great People," on Dec. 2 and 9, spotlights the leader’s role as a developer of people, helping them fulfill their personal work potential. Tools learned in the session will help participants self-right many of the "leadership-by-default" habits that plague many new or task-focused supervisors.

The courses are part of a four-part series that was developed at Boise State University. "Leading for Purpose" and "Leading for Legacy" will be taught in the spring.

The MSU instructor is Paul Bentley, who has 18 years of leadership experience in private industry, government and non-profit. As the global training manager for Micron CMS, he was responsible for leadership development, continuing education and all aspects of technical and corporate training in the U.S., Malaysia and Belgium. As the management development specialist and later the supervisor of instruction at Boise State University, Paul developed and taught leadership courses for over 4,000 business, government and non-profit leaders.

The courses cost $330 per session, or $600 for both sessions. Each session includes 14 hours of training and all course materials. Students can also earn 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) per session through MSU Extended University. Enrollment is capped at 24 students.
