Inclusionary zoning ban passes through Montana House

Housing

House Bill 259 aims to prohibit rules intended to assist working residents with moderate incomes.

A bill that would prohibit inclusionary zoning passed through the Montana House of Representatives Monday in a 65-35 vote.

Inclusionary zoning refers to municipal ordinances that require a given share of new construction be affordable by people with low to moderate incomes. Programs can vary.

Whitefish and Bozeman are the only two cities in the state that currently have inclusionary zoning, and they are at risk of losing affordable housing programs as the proposed bill moves to the Senate.
