Honda to Launch Wireless In-Motion EV Charging by 2027

Honda and its subsidiaries have developed a magnetic coupling wireless power transfer system that enables electric vehicles to recharge while in motion. This marks a structural shift in EV infrastructure and Honda’s strategic pivot toward battery-powered electric vehicles.

The system combines Honda’s high-power-density receiver and transmitter units with Taisei Corporation’s direct current power supply system and Taisei Rotec’s road-embedding technology. Designed primarily for logistics and commercial vehicles, the technology supports high-power wireless charging embedded in road pavement. Initial validation testing has been completed, and a public road demonstration is scheduled to begin April 1, 2027. Meanwhile, Florida is pioneering wireless in-road charging on a 125-mile highway, with over four miles equipped for dynamic charging.

Honda plans to introduce 15 hybrid EV models in North America within the next three years, while discontinuing its Prologue battery EV by 2027. The US Department of Energy highlights that dynamic wireless charging could reduce battery size and charging demand, improving cost-effectiveness and utility.

Looking ahead, Honda’s demonstration will be a key milestone for the technology’s real-world viability.

Montana’s expansive highway network and rural geography may make wireless charging systems particularly valuable for commercial EV fleets operating over long distances. Such innovation could influence infrastructure planning and energy logistics in regions like Montana, where charging accessibility remains a challenge.
