Glacier Processing Co-op Revitalizes Montana’s Only USDA Meat Plant

Glacier Processing Cooperative’s $200,000 upgrade preserves Montana’s only USDA-inspected Flathead Valley meat plant.

Formed by five ranching families in 2023, the cooperative purchased the historic facility in Northwest Montana to address local processing bottlenecks and support regional markets. This structural move responds to years of consolidation in U.S. meatpacking that left Montana ranchers with limited local options.

The co-op acquired Montana Jerky Company, Vandevanter Meats, and a 20-acre property in 2024, investing about $200,000 to meet USDA inspection standards after a yearlong effort. Currently serving 40 Montana farms, ranches, and four state fairs, the facility plans a 6,000 square foot expansion to increase capacity, allowing Montana Jerky Company to fully occupy the existing building. The upgrade will enable the plant to age 100 head of beef at a time and accommodate growth for a decade or more.

Construction on the expansion is set to start soon, positioning the cooperative to expand retail markets and processing capabilities.

Given Montana’s abundance of cattle but scarce local processing options, Glacier Processing Cooperative’s efforts could reduce transport costs and enhance supply chain resilience for ranchers statewide. The cooperative model may encourage similar regional initiatives in Montana’s rural communities, where preserving local infrastructure aligns with the state’s agricultural heritage and economic interests.
