Full Swing PR – How We Succeeded in Helping Ruchika T. Malhotra Tell Her Story On Her Terms

Caitlin has followed Ruchika’s rise to stardom (in our world, anyway) since they met in an Uber in Bozeman, Montana, back in 2018. Since then, Ruchika’s work has been called “transformative” by Brené Brown, and since then has been featured in many household-name media outlets.

Ruchika approached us because our agency aligns with her values and because she wanted to work with people who understood her desire to tell her story on her own terms.

Even though she’s already an accomplished writer and trusted media source, she wanted to help craft the story of changing her name from “Tulshyan” to “Malhotra” and sparking a conversation about the power of names in our society, particularly for women of color.

The first step of our work in helping tell her story was publishing Ruchika’s op-ed on MSNBC.com’s Know Your Value, reaching over 8.8 million unique monthly visitors.

We’re continuing to surface opportunities for Ruchika to provide commentary on Vice President Kamala Harris’s historic candidacy for president amid the right-wing smear campaign involving deliberate mispronunciations of her name and labeling her as the “DEI hire.”

Not only is Ruchika being sought out for her expertise on inclusion and belonging, but she also has a deep personal connection to her own name and her decision to change it to match her husband’s and son’s after estrangement from her father.
