Liz Cheney warns of Jim Jordan taking over as House Speaker
Former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney told a sold-out crowd in Missoula Thursday that one of the top candidates to replace freshly ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was at the “top of the list” of Republicans who enabled the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“The notion that the Republican Party is anywhere close to contemplating putting Jim Jordan into the position of Speaker of the House is something that tells you the level of risk we face in our democracy today,” Cheney said, referring to the Ohio congressman who has emerged as one of the top two Republicans competing to replace McCarthy as speaker.
Cheney, who at one point was the No. 3 Republican in the U.S. House, was speaking at the invitation of the University of Montana’s Mansfield Center, part of the center’s 40th-anniversary “Mansfield Lectures.”
