First Security Bank plans $23.5M facility in Missoula’s Mid-Town built from cross-laminated timber. Could be the first of its kind in the region.
“The Southgate Triangle of Midtown is emerging in the master plan as the top place for commercial redevelopment,” said Melanie Brock with the Missoula Redevelopment Agency. “We’re excited about this project in Midtown and hope it spurs many new projects. We’re seeing happen organically what the data is saying is ripe to happen.”
Once the First Security Bank building is finished, taxes on the property will more than doubled to around $280,000 annually. That funding will be further reinvested into other public projects throughout the Midtown area.
CLT really is a dream material, it’s made from wood, a renewable resource, it sequesters carbon, it is strong enough to replace wood and concrete in higher buildings, and right now, it helps use up some of the billions of board-feet of mountain pine-beetle infested wood that will rot if we don’t cut it and use it fast.

A garage billed as Northern California’s first fully automated parking structure has opened in Oakland. People drive up, drop off the car and walk away. A machine lifts the car to one of the 39 spaces in the seven-level structure.
This session will examine two transformative trends. The first is the rise of the sharing economy, private sector ride-hailing services, autonomous vehicles and associated web-based tools for trip planning, ride hailing and fare payment.
The Parkhaus: An automatic parking system could keep cars off the streets and recharge EVs at the same time.
The smart structures could do all the work so drivers don’t have to.
