Mae Nan Ellingson has spent her entire career devoted to public service. In fact, she can’t imagine doing anything else.

“That’s just obvious,” said Ellingson, who received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Montana last month. “If there’s something to be done and I can help with it, I will. I just will help.”

Ellingson served as the youngest delegate to Montana’s Constitutional Convention in 1972. At the time, she was a 24-year-old graduate student and one of just 19 women at the convention. She teamed up with colleague Bob Campbell to write the preamble to the constitution and played key roles in securing the right to privacy and the “clean and healthful environment” provision.

As bond counsel with Dorsey & Whitney for three decades, Ellingson had a hand in nearly every public financing project across the state.
