Caltrans seeks engineering students

OAKLAND — Caltrans is accepting applications for its Summer Engineering Institute, a free, two-week seminar for
high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in engineering careers.

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Bob Haus, the agency’s public information officer, said the institute has two objectives. "During the past several
years, we have seen a marked decline in the number of students studying civil engineering," he said. "Everyone is
feeling the effects of the engineer shortage, especially Caltrans. We would like to reverse that trend."

Among engineers and students enrolled in engineering courses, African Americans and Latinos continue to be
under-represented, he said.

"Although this program is open to all, we are particularly encouraging African-American and Latino students to
apply," he said.

The deadline to apply is May 15.
