Bozeman increases developer fee to get out of parking
December 21, 2018 /
Developers who build downtown and want to pay cash instead of including the required number of parking spots in their projects now face a higher price to do so.
This week Bozeman commissioners approved a parking cash-in-lieu fee hike from $5,000 to $25,000. They said it’s time to charge closer to the cost it takes to build parking.

I’m afraid that this is the complete opposite to what larger communities are implementing. Most experts in the field believe we will have many fewer cars in the future and that valuable land, especially in the city core, should not be wasted by parking today. City planners must consider not what will be in 5 years but what will be in 10 or 15 years when the long followed religion of “carcatecture” will be eliminated. No longer will our transportation, built environment and life be dictated by the car. Time to start making the big changes in policy no so a lot of money and resources won’t be wasted on development that will not be necessary in the very near future. Montana can lead the way but not by short sighted policies like this.
