Former head of Great Harvest: Take advantage of where you live

The difficulties associated with operating a business in Montana are well-known, said Tom McMakin http://www.tommcmakin.com/ , former head of the Dillon-based Great Harvest Bread Co.

But the competitive advantages, though more obscure, are no less important, he said.

After leaving Great Harvest, McMakin wrote "Bread and Butter," a book describing the growth of the breadmaking franchise. He also co-founded Thrive Capital Partners, a consulting firm that helps private equity groups invest in growing companies. He splits his time between Bozeman and Palo Alto, Calif.
One advantage of being a business owner in Montana is the cachet of the state itself.

"We have this marvelous meta-brand: Montana," he said.
