Atlassian Central Sets New Height Record of 580 feet for Glued-Laminated and Cross-Laminated Timber Towers

Atlassian Central has topped out at 180 meters, more than doubling the previous hybrid timber skyscraper height.

SHoP Architects and BVN Architecture have completed the structural frame of Atlassian Central in Sydney, marking a new global benchmark for hybrid timber towers. This milestone reflects growing adoption of hybrid timber construction in high-rise buildings by combining engineered timber with concrete and steel to reduce environmental impact.

The 39-story building incorporates roughly 10,000 cubic meters of glued-laminated and cross-laminated timber within a concrete core and steel exoskeleton. BVN Principal Peter Titmus highlights the project’s aim for a 50% reduction in embodied carbon and operational energy use, achieved through design innovation and prefabrication methods. Work continues on the facade, which will feature solar panels and an automated cooling system, with completion expected by year-end.

While this project unfolds in Australia, similar approaches could resonate with Montana’s construction sector, where hybrid timber might offer both environmental advantages and efficiency gains.
