Analysis: Redefining Nonmetro Counties Could Affect Rural Identity, Development, and Federal Funding

The impact of the proposed change is so little understood that the Office of Management and Budget should take a much closer look before deciding, according to an analysis from the Center for Sustainable Development at the Brookings Institution.

The proposal could remove Missoula from the list, as well as Great Falls, forcing them to relinquish millions of dollars in federal funding, including revenue targeted for housing.
Where Have All the Metropolitan Statistical Areas Gone?
Officials in some of the cities included in the list of 144 are expressing concern that the change would affect federal funding for programs tied to MSA designation, like housing, transportation, and Medicare reimbursement programs, and create more competition for funding devoted to rural locations.
