The businesses on this year’s Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in America are a particularly inspiring breed: Between 2016 and 2019, this year’s crop boasted a median revenue of $10.2 million and a median growth rate of 165.3 percent. To be sure, those figures don’t include 2020 and the pain Covid-19 has inflicted on nearly every industry. Still, here’s what we know about how Inc. 5000 companies are faring: Only 11 percent have cut staff since March, and 47 percent are landing talent let loose by others. Last month, 80 percent of them anticipated profitability for 2020.

What’s striking about this year’s class is how many of them have spent this year remaking themselves on the fly. Roughly half of them will emerge from the pandemic transformed by new products, services, and markets. That’s an astonishing figure, and proof that the vision that led these Inc. 5000 companies to fast growth also is helping them thrive in an extraordinary crisis.
