A Spot in the Black Hills for the Golden Years – Hill City, South Dakota

IN a state otherwise blanketed by cornfields and grasslands, South Dakota’s Black Hills are an oasis of rugged mountains, rushing streams and ponderosa pine.

The self-proclaimed Heart of the Hills is Hill City http://www.hillcitysd.com/ , a small town a half-hour drive southwest of Rapid City that has a prominent Main Street lined with shops and restaurants and a railroad siding that’s still in use. The town and its surrounding hills and valleys are attracting retirees and second-home owners on their way to becoming retirees, as well as younger people seeking scenic beauty, a bit of culture, laid-back attitudes — and modest home and land prices.
