UC students’ big ideas wow judges with big money on line

Each had three minutes to explain. The five judges, just regular people, were also no dummies: a venture capitalist, a TV news reporter, Oakland’s mayor, the university’s provost and a member of UC’s Board of Regents. At stake: a $10,000 prize to be shared by three of the 10 competitors — each of whom was already a first-place winner on one of UC’s 10 campuses. This was the first Grand Slam. Or, in this case, the "Grad Slam."
