Art looms large in Bigfork economy

After Firman H. “Bo” Brown started the Bigfork Summer Playhouse in 1960, the tiny village began to evolve from a gas and grocery stop to a full-blown arts community and tourist Mecca.
Today, the playhouse — owned by Don and Jude Thomson since 1971 — draws crowds to fill the 400-plus seats in the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts.
A host of galleries and shops join forces with the playhouse to attract patrons of the arts to the quaint town.
According to the Bigfork Neighborhood Plan, the number of art galleries has more than doubled in recent years, from six in 1993 to 14 by 2006.
