The five-year Faculty Early Career Development award will be used in her team´s work on mathematical models used by optical systems that recognize characters on printed pages and enable them to be converted to digital format.

Barney Smith´s goal is to assist in the development of scanner technology that can recognize faded and degraded printed characters.

Barney Smith is the second BSU scientist to receive an NSF career grant, an award to faculty who are in tenure-track positions but have not yet attained tenure.
