Wyo. touted for Mexican visitors

Mexicans who like to spend their summers in the Colorado Rockies may consider Wyoming for their second homes, a Mexican government official said.

Leticia Calzada, a Mexican consul general, told Gov. Dave Freudenthal on Monday that Mexicans spend summers in Colorado in larger numbers every year. She said Wyoming, with its similar climate and beauty, would be an alternative many might find attractive.

Freudenthal said Wyoming offers unique Western experiences, and the state needs to better market itself to visitors, such as the Mexican summer guests.

Calzada said the tourism opportunities for Wyoming business from Mexican visitors may be on the rise, particularly in the Jackson area.

Calzada said a delegation of Idaho officials, including the governor, is about to visit Mexico. Two years ago, more than 100 businesspeople from Colorado made a similar visit, she said.

Freudenthal said most of Wyoming’s economic focus is on energy, agriculture and other industries that drive the state’s economy, but he was open to sending a delegation south of the border.
