Proposals Aim to Bring More Technology, Knowledge-based Businesses to Midwest

Preview:

The Midwest has traditionally lagged behind other regions when it comes to attracting new economy businesses. This year, several bold legislative proposals have been introduced in the various Midwestern states as part of efforts to foster growth in the technology- and knowledge-based economic sectors.

"To a large degree, the Midwest has
lagged behind other parts of the
nation in developing and fostering a
high-tech economy. To remedy this,
the region’s policymakers are aggressively
looking for ways to encourage
the innovative, entrepreneurial
activity needed to attract and develop
“new economy businesses,” which, in
turn, can help states retain their most
talented and educated young people."

Even as lawmakers grapple with severe budget shortfalls, they are considering significant investments in new economic development proposals, hoping such plans will lead to greater prosperity — and additional tax revenue — in the future.
