Disability Rights Montana defends proposed MDC closure

The Department of Justice reported 73 instances of abuse and neglect in the past 14 months at MDC, Caferro said, and two of these were sexual assaults.

"This is unacceptable," she said. "My intent is that people are safe. I don’t like abuse. I don’t like rape."

The annual cost for an MDC client is $270,000, she said, and is projected to climb to $310,000 per year, in the proposed budget for 2016-2017.

The average cost for someone receiving community care is $40,000.
