Garnet, Montana in winter provides a great getaway where for those who work to get there

Although the heyday of Garnet Ghost Town is long past, winter recreation enthusiasts and private miners still frequent the town through the winter months.

After carrying our packs five miles up Cave Gulch Road on snowshoes last weekend, we were expecting a reward of solitude — though we secretly hoped for a few hauntings by the town’s notorious former residents.

Upward of 18,000 of people come to Garnet each year, with the majority of them exploring the area in the warmer months. Last year, about 600 people stayed in the cabins between December and the end of April, Craig said, adding about half of those visitors arrived on snowmobile.

"We have people who have come back for 20 years,"
