Clear! Bozeman High students try their hands at medical skills – SKC, St. Luke program pairs students, nurses in hospital setting

Simon kept dying Thursday, and Bozeman High School students kept saving his life.

Simon, a computer-operated mannequin, can simulate a patient having a heart attack or other crises. Normally used in training emergency medical technicians, Simon was brought to Bozeman High on Thursday for the first biomedical science classes’ skills day.

Some 220 students from eight biomedical classes got the chance to try shocking Simon’s heart back to life with a defibrillator.

At other stations, students tried drawing blood from a plastic-and-foam arm, and giving needle injections to an orange.

"We want students to have contact with real medical professionals," said Amy Washtak, chair of the school’s health sciences department. "We want them to be aware of job opportunities and growth in the health care industry."

SKC, St. Luke program pairs students, nurses in hospital setting

"We learned how to be a bedside nurse," McDaniel says.

That’s not the case anymore.
