Strategy: The deliberate reduction of alternatives

Here’s a take on leadership and strategy that you won’t read in any textbook: Leadership is the business of avoiding liquidation. Startling? Yes, but think about it. It’s quite true. A business leader’s job is to keep the organization viable. Now ponder this one: Strategy is the deliberate reduction of alternatives. In other words, it’s choosing one path and in so doing not choosing all the others. So what’s strategic planning? It’s the long-term deliberate reduction of alternatives in order to avoid liquidation.
