Before you set up shop in the spare bedroom, do your home office homework

When Mike Rustin moves into a new home, it doesn’t take him long to meet his neighbors.

His business, Rustin Construction, is a one-man operation and he uses a home office to compile bids and do book work.

That means he needs to get a Home Occupation Certificate from the city of Great Falls. The application requires that anyone who wants to have a business in their home, anything from an office for a construction firm to a candle-making operation, get permission from the adjacent residents.

"If people have questions, they want to know about noise or how it will impact the neighborhood visually, rightly so," said Rustin, who has lived in several Great Falls neighborhoods and now resides in the Grande Vista subdivision. "I would not want to look outside and see a backhoe parked on my street or have seven vehicles parked in front of my house."
