Women can succeed in engineering, says Fluor president, Lisa Glatch

Lisa Glatch has a snappy comeback if anyone suggests that the reason she reached the top at one the world’s largest engineering companies is that she’s a token women.

Glatch simply points out that since she took charge four years ago as the first woman president for one of Fluor Corp.’s four global divisions, her group’s revenue has grown from $1 billion to $3 billion. Yes, that’s billion.

"If someone wants to say ‘You’re a token,’ I’ll be a token," she said and laughed.

Program aims to spark girls’ interest in science

Two high school girls sat on a classroom floor Thursday and played with a robotic catapult.

"So, what should we throw?" asked one.

The two Central Catholic High School juniors tinkered with the Lego contraption and loaded a small tire into the catapult.

The robot is part of TechGYRLS, a YWCA program that pushes girls toward math and science.

The program is important because women in science professions are still relatively rare, said Sarah Zook, Central teacher.

According to the YWCA, women make up just 9 percent of engineering degree recipients.
