Good management is secret of employee loyalty, longtimers say

Rick Rowe split his time Tuesday afternoon between mending a plasma cutter and organizing purchase orders at the family-owned Gem State Welders Supply, where he’s been employed for 31 years.

When he was hired in 1974, his new boss told him no day would ever be the same.

"And it’s true. No day is the same," Rowe said.

Variety is a big factor in keeping Rowe showing up every day to the only job he has had since he left the Navy. "I just like it," said Rowe, a quiet man who tends to answer in monosyllables.
