Montana will put computer contract to modernize motor vehicle registration and issuing of driver’s licenses out to bid

A multimillion-dollar contract for one of the state’s largest computer projects will be put out for competitive bids rather than be awarded to a company proposed by the Justice Department, state officials have decided.

The contract is to complete a three-year, $22.5 million project to modernize motor vehicle registration and issuing of driver’s licenses.

Among other things, the new system will enable Montanans to use the Internet to register vehicles and renew driver’s licenses.

The request for bids on the contract, worth up to $15 million, is expected to out next week.

"We’re trying to get it out as fast as we can," said Sheryl Olson, deputy director of the state General Services Division. The project has deadlines for partial completion next year, and Olson will personally oversee the contract selection process.
