Wind power arrives in Montana … at last

Rising out of the prairie like aliens in some really cool science fiction movie, wind power generators soon will be providing a big chunk of Montana’s electricity supply. And they will do so without the pollution inherent to most other types of generation.

NorthWestern Energy said Tuesday it has signed an agreement to buy up to 150 megawatts of electricity from a company that will spend $150 million building an 8,000-acre wind farm in Wheatland County just south of Judith Gap. The company, Invenergy Wind LLC, already has 25 wind-power projects in development or completed in the United States and Canada totaling more than 2,500 megawatts.

The Wheatland County wind farm — the first major wind facility in the state — is expected to produce 8 percent of NorthWestern’s total energy at prices competitive with power generated from other sources.
