Wayve and Uber Launch AI Robotaxis in London with Human Supervisors

London’s Transport for London recently granted Private Hire Vehicle licences to Wayve, an autonomous driving firm, and its partner Uber. This regulatory approval enables the deployment of AI-driven robotaxis within London’s complex urban landscape, marking a structural shift in how ride services may operate in the city.

The licences cover Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles outfitted with Wayve’s AI Driver technology, which learns from experience without relying on traditional HD maps or geofencing. Each trip requires a licensed human supervisor onboard to monitor the system and intervene if necessary. Over 100,000 Londoners signed up in the past eight weeks to Uber’s Interest List, with select participants gaining access to autonomous rides later this summer. These rides will operate under the Government’s AV Trialling Code of Practice and Uber’s Private Hire Operator licence, ensuring compliance with safety and policy standards.

Later this summer, these early rides will provide critical feedback ahead of a planned full public launch.
