University of Montana, Montana State University keep R1 status – Trump orders fuel questions, concern over research funding on Montana campuses
February 17, 2025/
The University of Montana is holding on to its prestigious R1 status after first receiving the designation in 2022. Montana State University also met the criteria of a R1 institute for 2025.

UM and MSU are among less than four percent of colleges nationwide with the designation, according to the University of Montana.
